Die for Something Beautiful

*’You’ll never find all the things you want, Breaking free from the chains that haunt you, They will haunt you, From the watergates to the break of dawn, Keep finding the things that turn me on, Turn me on’ – Breaking free from the chains that haunt you is link to them breaking free from the trauma of Lieseil. A watergate is a gate of a town or castle opening on to a sea. In this case, the sea surrounds Obsidian Island. The break of dawn is when the sun comes out, and the moon children have to go back underground. They are finding things that make them happy during the night.

*’We walk the transit streets, Until you find me, Until we finally met, And I’ll say that’ – A transit street is a street/set of streets in which automobile traffic is prohibited/restricted, and only public transit vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians are permitted. The use of ‘streets’ links to Ma Cherie, and it’s possible that the same person is referenced in both songs.

*’You’ve got to die for something beautiful, Diamonds break our aching minds, Elegance is turning us sober’ – You’ve got to die for something beautiful is saying that they are prepared to die for the revolution. Elegance is turning people sober as alcohol is condemned. This could perhaps link into the red drink, which is a form of control by Lieseil, therefore people do not want to be seen drinking it. Diamonds are a symbol of purity, innocence, love and faithfulness. The aching minds could be the result of the experiments/brainwashing and therefore love is healing it.

*’Every time I see your face at night, Moving slowly through the wanted lights, Watermarks illuminate your eyes, Every time I see them make me want to cry’ – The first line links to only being outside at night. The wanted lights could be the streetlights, supporting the theory that this is the same person as Ma Cherie. Watermarks could either be tears from crying, or watermarks used for branding, which could be the squiggly eye symbol seen in Palaye’s art and Remington’s makeup. The lyricist is most likely in love with the character and doesn’t like to see them upset.

*’Shoot us own with all the lies, Crawl on your knees you might survive, You delay the things you know you hide, Stained glass house will make you cry, It’ll make you cry’ – The first line is talking about Lieseil shooting and injuring them with lies. To try to escape Lieseil’s attacks, you must crawl on the ground and get a close to the underground as possible. Stained glass windows are often used in religious buildings and churches. A stained glass house could possibly be referring to a church since Palaye uses a lot of religious imagery. In this case, the church represents power and control, it is simply another tool used by Lieseil. It will make you cry because they will manipulate you and make you feel bad.

*’Boy you got to stick to your guns, Before the crystals shoot out your mouth, Pack the walls before the lines fall out’ – Sticking to your guns means to refuse to compromise or change, despite criticism. It could also be used in a literal sense, as we know from the underground that the ‘youth are given guns’. Crystals are often used in healing, this could possibly mean that you have to stick to your own thoughts and refuse to be changed, otherwise they will force everything good out of you. ‘The walls’ could be linked to the ‘wicked walls’ seen in Love the Void. If a person falls in/into line, they start to follow rules. ‘Lines fall out’ could be the opposite of that.

*’Movement stops in the windmills, Finding out what killed you, Relapse in the sin, We start over again, Words just fade away, Finding the things to say, Relapse in the sin, Oh we go again’ – This could be describing Obsidian Island stopping in its tracks and ‘starting over’ after the revolution.

*’We are the youth, In a crowd of love, We fight for peace, Until the burnt out sun’ – This is the revolution fighting for peace. The revolution is mainly made up of the youth because it is the new generation that is ‘waking up’ to Lieseil’s brainwashing.
